RC-10 SERIES AIR COOLED SCREW

The focus of this project was to replace an existing TRANE air cooled scroll condensing unit with a custom built SAMSA, Inc. RC-10 Series Air Cooled Screw Condensing unit complete with the MCS Magnum Micro Processor Control. The newly designed condensing unit would out perform the design conditions of the Trane RAUC-C30 condensing unit by 31 percent. A single Hanbell screw compressor featuring unlimited compressor capacity control from 35 percent of total capacity was used. By adding hot gas bypass we were able to further reduced the compressor capacity to 12 percent or 4.2 ton.

The original designed system used a model RAUC-C30 Trane air cooled condensing unit, . The unit was to supply all cooling required for the OB and Administration wings of a hospital. The DX coil was sized to supply 52° F. discharge air with a 25% mix of 95° F. outside air. The Trane condensing unit was a nominal 30 ton condensing unit at design conditions of 115° F. condensing temperature @ 95° F. ambient temperature with a saturated suction temperature of 44° F. entering the condensing unit. In other words, a 76 Lbs suction pressure. This engineering gives us a 30.4 ton unit, but it is not an effective design for space cooling nor is it adequate for space dehumidification. On days above 80° F. outdoor air temperature the system struggled to meet space demand and lost building space temperature. The evaporator could cool more if saturated suction temperature was reduced to 35° F. which is the typical DX evaporator design condition.

The Trane RAUC-C30 at the 37° F. SAT temperature could only produce 27.6 ton rejection which is a little short of the total system requirements.

The custom SAMSA, Inc. RC-10 Series Screw features the Micro Controls, Inc. Magnum Microprocessor. The Magnum control is a master micro controller board with twelve 0-5vdc sensor inputs, four 0vdc or 5vdc digital inputs, ten 230vac 6.3amp relay outputs, four 0-10vdc analog outputs, keypad, 128 x 64 dot pixel STN monochrome graphics LCD with 2.8" diagonal viewing area, real time clock, MCS-I/O, RS-232, RS-485 and Ethernet communication ports. User selectable 115 or 230vac operation.

The Magnum is a rugged microprocessor based controller designed for the hostile environment of the HVAC/R industry. It is designed to be the primary manager of the package it is controlling.

The Magnum provides flexibility with set points and control options that can be selected prior to commissioning a system or when the unit is live and functioning. The control displays alarms and other interfaces are accomplished in a clear and simple language which informs the user as to the status of the controller.

The Micro Controls Magnum panel mount display is a 128 X 64 dot pixel STN monochrome graphics LCD with 2.8" diagonal viewing area.

The characters are white on a blue background and color scheme is reversible.

The keypad size is 5.50"w X 8.69"h with four mounting holes.

Key pad layout consists of nine keys of which three are function keys

Connections to the Magnum board is accomplished with a 6 conductor shielded cable, with a 50' maximum length of cable.

Operation temperatures from -4° F. to + 158° F. (-20° C. to +70° C.)

Storage Temperatures from -22° F. to +158° F. (-30° C. to +70° C.)

SAMSA, Inc. engineered the condenser with low speed fans for quiet operation. The condenser features heavy gauge galvanized metal, a floating condenser coil, a compressor compartment with double doors, door catches on all doors and two electrical panels. One panel for high voltage and one panel for the microprocessor. The base can be adapted to fit multiple Hanbell compressors, a cooler or liquid evaporator, liquid receiver and condenser flooding valve for -20° F. low ambient operation. We offer this style condenser from 20 ton to 125 ton.

This custom built air cooled condensing unit features the Hanbell RC-10 screw compressor. The Hanbell RC-10 was the perfect compressor for a system which once cycled two 15 ton scroll compressors for capacity control. The Hanbell line of compressors are a superior high quality precise machinery line of screw compressors.
